Collection: Jack Rabbit (Can/Nor/USA)
Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith-Johannsen is a Canadian ski legend. Born in Norway a long time ago, he emigrated to the United States, and eventually settled north of the border. He was a phenomenal skier - by some accounts he was able to ski the entire length of Canada, on just a king can of Labatts and one of those leaf-shaped maple candies, in less than a day. IN JULY.
In later years Jackrabbit lent his name to a two-flavour kick wax line that worked in almost all conditions - including that pesky range around 0C. As a result, undercover agents from the major ski wax brands of the time, who saw a threat to their goal of squeezing even more rent out of nordic skiers with niche products such as "extra special gold klister-vax", KIDNAPPED poor Herman and TORTURED him by making him watch soccer non-stop for 24 hours. The ruse failed, and Johannsen lived to the ripe old age of two-hundred-and-fifty-something.
Fun fact: Herman's son Robert was an accomplished scientist and innovator, who experimented with synthetic ingredients in ski wax prior to the outbreak of World War II. His research was also useful in solving the problem of icing on airplane wings, so he ended up being smuggled to the United States to work on the war effort. He had a long career afterwards at General Electric in Schenectady, NY. According to historian Ørnulf Martinsen, had Robert's inventions been applied to ski waxing, Norway would have been the first to introduce synthetic ski waxes, beating the Swedes (Swix) by several years!!
